Goji Berry

Fruit for Health is committed to providing up to date information on exotic and domestic fruits that can improve the quality of your life. Our health is often taken for granted, subtle warning signs are missed, as are appointments with a health care practitioner and naturopath. Generally the last indication that our body is failing or is in distress is PAIN. Some of us even try to ignore this warning sign.

It is usually when we cannot take the level of pain any longer that we make an appointment for some type of health care modality (massage therapy, chiropractic care, medical doctor assessment, reflexology) hoping for a quick fix solution so we can get back to our busy life ( work, kids, house, etc.). For some reason we put ourselves at the bottom of the priority list. We take care of everyone else’s needs before our own. This cycle of self neglect has to stop!

Goji Berry Facts

Take care of yourself by putting YOU first. Not only will you have more to give the world around you but you will feel re-energized and empowered. Goji juice is becoming popular because we are taking steps to a better, healthier life- something the native tribes in the remote mountain valleys of Tibet and Mongolia have practised for generations. The native people of these Himalayan mountain regions have prospered by the abundance of wild grown Goji berries that have never been exposed to pesticides or pollution. The nutrient rich soils in the sheltered valleys of the mountain ranges have produced the deciduous, woody perennial plant known as the Lycium Barbarum plant. This lush vine produces the oval, deep red Himalayan Goji berry (also referred to as the Tibetan Goji berry) which has induced a sense of well-being since it was discovered over 5000 years ago.

There are over 40 varieties of the Goji berry in Tibet alone, others found in inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi and Shanxi. Ancient herbalists and healers from Tibet, China and India have also discovered this tiny red fruit and have replanted the Lycium Barbarum vine in their homelands so they too can benefit from its miraculous health results. Goji berries are the secret to living a healthy, long life.

Health Benefits of Goji Berry

Nutritionists and homeopaths in North America and throughout Europe have discovered the benefits of the Goji berry and are manufacturing a wide variety of Goji fruit juices. Goji juice made from the exotic Goji fruit is rich in nutrients. This “happy fruit” has been researched and tested in studies involving animals and human blood at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. Physicians, chemists and nutritionists have found that the Goji berry scores exceptionally high on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) test. The ORAC is a scale that was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to measure how capable a certain food is at destroying free radicals in our body. Free radicals are precursor cells that cause illness and disease (cancer cells, pre-cancerous cells and heart disease to name a few).

The Himalayan Goji berry ranks the highest ORAC score of all the fruits in the world. Goji berry (rightly named the “longevity fruit”) scores 25,300 ORAC units per 100 grams compared to the second highest fruit, prunes, scoring 5,770 units per 100 grams. This ranking shows how amazing the Goji berry is at slowing the disease process by destroying free radicals. It is no wonder why some natives in the inner Mongolian tribe of Ningxia have a life expectancy of about 100 years.
