Doritos Nutrition Facts

With the culmination of the football season, more and more Americans are reaching for their snacks during the game. Although pizza and burgers are typical football fanfare, more and more Americans are reaching for chips. Of these, Doritos tops the list of brand of chips that are purchased. Most people consume Doritos with no regard for what comprises each chip. So what are we really eating when we inhale handfuls of these tasty treats?

First and foremost, the majority of the public fail to realize that the Doritos nutrition facts only apply to the individual serving size. For our purposes that only happens to be a mere eleven chips. So, everything in the nutrition facts label applies to just eleven chips. For the sake of clarity, let us just choose the most widely-manufactured, and most widely-consumed flavor: Nacho Cheese.

Doritos calorie information

Initially we see that while each serving contains a moderate 150 calories, 70 of these calories are derived from fat. As a staple, this would be indicative of a poor choice in diet, however, we are almost all guilty in indulging in these scrumptious snacks at times. Due to the fact that nearly fifty percent of the calories are comprised of fat, we often overlook the fact that our bodies are only able to use just over half of the Doritos we eat for immediate sources of energy, which is slightly disconcerting.

Fat content in Doritos

The total fat in each serving (eleven chips) is eight grams. We do not think of eights grams being a significant quantity of fat, however, a quick glance at the percentage daily value would shock us all. Eight grams of fat from one serving of Doritos is equal to twelve percent of what we should be consuming in an entire day, in terms of fat. While twelve percent does not seem to be that alarming, you must ask yourself, when was the last time you ate only eleven Doritos? The fats, of course, break down into unsaturated fats, saturated fats and trans fats. Of the total eight grams of fat, only 1.5 grams are saturated fat. Interestingly enough, the mere 1.5 grams of saturated fat is a whopping six percent of your recommended daily allowance.

Doritos can pride itself on saying there is no trans fat at all in Doritos, which is definitely a positive. Also, the mere 1.5 grams of saturated fat means there are 6.5 grams of unsaturated (or healthy) fat in each serving. Regardless, this may be something to consider the next time you watch a game, or do anything for that matter, when copious amounts of Doritos are around.

Sodium and cholesterol in Doritos

Doritos earns an A in the cholesterol department. There is literally none to speak of, which raises eyebrows. The salt on the other hand is a killer. There are 210 mg of sodium per serving. That maybe not seem like a whole lot, however, one look at the recommended daily allowance tells us the whole story. 210 mg of sodium is, in reality, nine percent of our recommended daily intake. That is horrible considering the actual number of chips we really consume!

Carbohydrates in Doritos

Next, we see that eleven chips buy us 17 grams of total carbohydrates. This comes out to a fairly moderate six percent of our total recommended daily intake. This of course, is fairly typical, as it is probably next to impossible to have a no-carb chip! Surprisingly enough, Doritos tout a gram of dietary fiber per serving. This is equivalent to four percent of the recommended daily allowance, but again, this is misleading. Many other sources for dietary fiber exist, with much fewer detrimental ingredients. Sugars are also present to the tune of one gram, as well. Unfortunately there is no posted recommended daily allowance so we can’t know for sure how worried we should be about one gram or sugar.

Protein in Doritos

Protein, the most satiating of all nutrients, makes a cameo appearance in Doritos : two grams. Needless to say, Doritos are an extremely poor source of protein. There is a good reason that protein is not an abundant nutrient in Doritos. The more protein an individual consumes the more signals their stomach sends to their brain to stop eating. For obvious reasons, that would be bad for Doritos’ bottom line.

Vitamins and minerals in Doritos

After the initial nutrition facts, there is a breakdown of the lesser nutrients, and vitamins. As far as Vitamin A goes, you can find two percent of your daily value in eleven Doritos. You can also find two percent of your Vitamin B6 in a serving of these marvelous chips. The same goes for thiamin, as well. Two percent again. That’s just the positive values. When it comes to calcium, or vitamin C, or Iron, we are rewarded with zero percent of our recommended daily values. It is quite apparent that we need to seek an alternate form of nutrition, if we are seeking to not only eat healthier, but also receive adequate nutrition.

Again, for the most part these values with never be realized quite the way they are described on the packaging or the way, in which I described them. This is because most people who consume Doritos, will undoubtedly consume a quantity greater than eleven. Also, it is of paramount importance to note that all of these values are valid only if the chip is “naked” or without bean dip, salsa, guacamole, or any other topping you can possibly think of. It is startling to consider what the

Doritos nutrition facts would be when toppings are weighed in. Eating more than eleven adds another variable to the equation that usually results in eventual obesity, increased health costs, and a plethora of other issues. It is accurate to say that the Doritos nutrition facts, though written in black and white, don’t exactly tell anything close to the whole story. Finally, it is important to note that the Doritos nutrition facts are only applicable in the event of a 2,000 calorie a day diet. This further clouds the legitimacy of the nutrition facts, because few Americans consume only 2,000 calories in a day. We must consider all of the attributes that the nutrition facts label fails to tell us.
